In case you haven’t heard the buzz 4G is the next generation mobile data network promising to bring faster speeds and better coverage to smart phone users. Recent trials in London have given a glimpse of what the new 4G network will be like and if the results are to be believed we could soon be enjoying data transfer rates 5-6 times the speed of 3G!
The current 3G network has done its job but 4G will offer significant improvements and finally deliver a service something like what users have always hoped for. There’s no doubt having the equivalent of a broadband connection available anywhere through your phone will be a real game changer for mobile users. These kinds of speeds will open the way for all kinds of possibilities and finally make desktop like browsing experiences a reality for smart phones users.
Before we all get too excited unfortunately there will be a bit of a wait before we are streaming audio and video seamlessly to our mobiles. There is currently no 4G network commercially available in the UK and very few 4G enabled handsets to access it not to mention what the network operators will charge for the service and what kind of data caps they will apply. Ofcom’s long delayed auction of 4G spectrum is due to take place later this year which will open the way for operators to begin rolling out the 4G network late 2012 early 2013.
Is it going to be worth the wait… we hope so.
